I can’t tell you how excited I am to have this website up and running. It really has been a labour of love, and with a lot of help it has become something I am so proud of. My plan for this blog is to not only showcase my latest work, but to also give tips and tricks to fellow photographers or to those wanting to learn how to document the beautiful people in their life. When I first starting learning photography, the lack of online resources was frustrating. I had to study books on photography and rely on a lot of trial and error. Now, there are an incredible amount of free resources on Youtube that can help one not only with the basics of photography, but also very advanced techniques. I continue to learn every day from that site.
One of the first things I think someone that is looking to improve their photography should learn about is light. Light is everything. Knowing how to detect good light, in my opinion, is the biggest contributor to a great photo. We are lucky in Ottawa to have several great locations and trails to take some gorgeous images but light always plays a big factor in your images. You could be taking photos in gorgeous Gatineau Hills, but if you have the sun right in your camera, you will not be happy with the results I promise you! My favourite time to photograph clients is the hour right before sunrise or the hour before sunset. The sun is low in the sky and it illuminates the client in the best way possible. I know, however, that people take photos at all times of the day, so it is always beneficial to learn how to photograph in every lighting scenario.
So here is my tip for today: when shooting in harsh light like the bright sun, always remember “Peter Pan”. I know it sounds crazy, but it will help you remember this easy technique! The concept is simple; when shooting in bright light, face your subject towards their shadow! Try it out and let me know what you think.
I can’t wait to share some more tips with you every week!
